Course Curriculum:
Week 1: Understanding Our Struggles
This week focuses on developing a loving and open attitude towards ourselves and our struggles. It introduces the "Four C's" for approaching meditation: Curiosity, Conviction, Commitment, and Container. We learn to see our struggles as opportunities to cultivate curiosity and soften into a state of awareness.
Week 2: Transforming Our View
This week challenges the idea that we need to "fix" ourselves. It introduces the concept of Buddhanature, our inherent potential for awakening, which is already present within us. We explore the idea that meditation is not about becoming a better person, but about shifting our perspective to see our Buddhanature more clearly.
Week 3: The Power of Meditation
This week delves deeper into the practice of meditation. We explore the concept of "no attainment" in meditation, emphasizing the process of cultivating awareness rather than striving for a specific result. We learn the importance of the "third C," commitment, to our practice, and the different ways to work with thoughts and emotions during meditation.
Week 4: Refining Our Meditation Part 1: Working Skillfully With Thoughts
This week focuses on skillfully working with thoughts in meditation. We learn to distinguish between thoughts and thinking, and to observe them with awareness rather than fighting them. We explore the concept of "stillness, movement, and awareness" as three modes of mind, and how to cultivate awareness as the foundation of meditation.
Week 5: Refining Our Meditation Part 2: Working Skillfully With Emotions
This week explores working with emotions in meditation. We learn about "beautiful monsters," distorted patterns that can block our communication between thoughts, emotions, and body. The "handshake practice" is introduced as a way to meet these emotional patterns with kindness and openness, allowing them to heal and transform.
Week 6: Compassion and Clear Seeing Part 1: Understanding and Working with Life
This week dives into the Four Noble Truths, the foundation of Buddhist thought. We explore the concept of Dukkha (suffering) and how understanding its nature can lead us towards liberation. We learn to soften into our suffering and see it as a teacher, ultimately turning towards the path of ending suffering.
Week 7: Compassion and Clear Seeing Part 2: The Four Seals
This week explores the Four Seals, core Buddhist teachings about the nature of reality. These seals are impermanence, Dukkha, emptiness, and Nirvana. We learn to see how understanding these seals can help us relax with the nature of reality and cultivate compassion.
Week 8: Compassion and Clear Seeing Part 3: The Mind of Awakening
This week explores the Mahayana path and the concept of Bodhicitta, the awakened mind. We learn about relative and absolute Bodhicitta, and how they work together to cultivate true compassion and wisdom. We explore how realizing egolessness is the root of genuine compassion and leads to right action in the world.
